Having the urge to design and craft my own Nclosures out of polycarbonate was so exciting, little did I know where my journey would lead me. I would soon find out that there are a wide range of acrylics and clear polycarbonate sheets. They are not the same material and differ due to the composition of chemicals used to manufacture them. Not only are they different, but you also get different grades for each. All grades have different properties, which suits unique applications. It has taken me nearly two years to find the right grade, for many different reasons. How the material reacts when exposed to different temperatures, structural integrity after ventilation holes have been created, flexibility and anti-crack/shatter properties. Unlike acrylics, polycarbonate can withstand very high and low temperatures, in a range of minus fifty and plus fifty degrees. Where and what is polycarbonate mainly used for? Think of ballistic protection, that is one of the main applications of polycarbonate. It acts like glass, the only difference is that is offers protection from projectiles and is hailed as a miracle material. Other applications can be found in motor-sport,(race car, motorbike windscreens and aerospace.) manufacturing and machinery,(tool guards.) blast and projectile protection like riot shields. A lot has been taken into consideration for sourcing suitable materials. The Scandinavian redwood is sourced from a certified supplier, who is one of the largest timber merchants in the country. Their quality of timber is second to none! There is a long process involved when seasoning timber. Technically the timber it is still very much alive and breaths. It expands and contracts, inhaling and exhaling. When playing with wood, knowing how to season timber is a very important step of the craft. Why is this so important? This is due to different storing environments. The humidity level in a warehouse is not the same as a dwelling. A warehouse is cold and the humidity is very high, this increases the timbers water content. Causing expansion. If you do not season the timber before use within a low humidity environment, this will cause contraction and shrinkage. Which can lead to many problems in the future and ultimately, be the result of product failure. The duration for seasoning Redwood at Nclosures.Ltd is six months. This all depends on the size. I will check the timber every four weeks and this is done by using a moisture meter. The ideal moisture content is eight percent. Only when this threshold has been reached, can the timber be used. This is the level of detail that Nclosures hails from and it is always a pleasure to offer quality that takes time. Not only do you have to wait for production and delivery to be completed. Just remember that the wood had to wait even longer... 🕷💕🕷
